Prep Lawn Now!

(Omaha, NE)  — Whew! Spring is here. Right now is the time. Time to hire an Omaha professional lawn maintenance company to prep the lawn for – total turf health wellness! The trucks have already hit the streets. Heartland Lawns Omaha NE is out and about applying the new season’s must haves: 1) granular fertilizer to promote root growth, and 2) pre-emergent to control the area’s worst weeds: foxtail, broadleaf and crabgrass.

“Homeowners should water the lawn coming out of Winter, too. The sooner you water, the quicker your lawn will turn green while allowing the fertilizer we apply to work,” remarks Heartland Lawns Owner Dan Setlak.

You’ll also want to sharpen the lawn mower blade to guarantee a good clean cut. If that important task is ignored, the actual grass blades get frayed opening up the turf to disease.

Additionally, Heartland Lawns Omaha NE also recommends you remove any left over fall branches and leaves. Plus, rake or blown out sand and gravel so it doesn’t get onto the lawn.

Vole Toll

(Omaha, NE)  — The Vole Toll! Those pesky field mice can wreak havoc on lawns. “We’ve seen a lot of Vole damage in the Omaha area. Voles are prominent where snow was present. They burrow under the snow and cause lawn damage,” notes Dan Setlak, owner of Heartland Lawns in Omaha NE.

Vole populations can rapidly expand, in fact, each female can have 5 to 10 litters per year. So the sooner you get rid of the rodents - the better.  While Heartland Lawns Omaha NE does not handle vole exterminations, the Omaha turf health wellness company offers tips – several options on how to kill voles:

  • Insert zinc phosphide pellets inside trails & burrow openings.  Warning: don’t apply to bare ground. Toxin can hurt birds, and be hazardous to crops
  • Anticoagulant baits release a slow-acting toxin requiring from five to 15 days to take effect
  • Use traps. May be effective if there’s not a lot of voles
  • A mousetrap baited with peanut butter or an apple slice

1st Spring 2010 Grass Disease

By Susan L. Stern

(Heartland Lawns Omaha NE)  –  Spring is near. Have no fear! While temps were frightful this Winter, Omaha Nebraska lawns do rejuvenate themselves – with proper professional care. But before you start the mower & rake, examine your lawn for signs of Snow Mold – a common disease with many varieties infecting most grass types which endured freezing temperatures and snow.

Notes Heartland Lawns, LLC. Omaha NE Owner Dan Setlak, “snow mold looks like pale yellow grass that appears stuck together. In most cases, simple raking is not enough. Your lawn needs professional help now with a combination of nutrient-rich fertilizer to rid the unsightly disease, aeration which loosens the soil, and a commitment to future preventative maintenance before winter strikes next year.”

The first disease of Spring doesn’t mean your lawn is a lost cause. In fact, if you act quickly and properly when snow melts, your family’s lawn can recover and look vibrant, green and plush this Spring, Summer & Fall.

Best advice. If your lawn has a Snow Mold outbreak, your most promising solution is to call Heartland Lawns Omaha NE now for a thorough and professional inspection and quote.

It’s rewarding to have a beautiful lawn. Let Heartland Lawns help you reach that goal! Call Now at 402-492-8800!
